Perfumes: How to find the Right Fragrance
FRAgrance definition: best perfume for women and men
Having a signature scent is an alluring beauty aspect that enhances your overall #glowreousness. Scents have unique power in that they can attract a potential mate, evoke memories, and stir the emotions. When it comes to picking a new scent, it’s important to be aware of some key facts so that you pick a fragrance that suits your unique body chemistry and preferences. Here, we’ll detail a few tips that you can use to smell your best throughout the summer and beyond.
#1 Choose the correct concentration from cologne to parfum
Perfumes and colognes have four levels of concentration, ranging from very light to quite strong. Each level of fragrance concentration will last on the skin for different periods of time. These concentrations, in order from lowest to highest, are:
- Eau de cologne – the lightest scent (and typically the cheapest price), lasting about 2 hours
- Eau de toilette – a light scent (usually affordable), lasting about 3 hours
- Eau de parfum – a stronger scent, typically lasting about 6 hours
- Parfum or perfume – the strongest and most expensive, usually lasting all day with just one application
Each fragrance concentration offers a different degree of “strength”, so be sure to look at the label when purchasing. If you prefer a lighter scent, stick to an eau de cologne or eau de toilette and apply it more frequently throughout the day, for instance.
#2 Play the right notes, fragrance meaning
Scents come in a wide array of selections, oftentimes called “notes.” Notes consist of 3 layers which are classified as top, middle, and base notes.
Top notes are generally the lightest (sometimes referred to as “head notes”) and are the first to fade. Middle notes are typically well-rounded, longer-lasting notes that appear once the top notes fade. Middle notes are referred to as “heart notes,” and are oftentimes a smooth combination of floral, fruit, or spice scents. The base notes are typically rich notes that linger on the skin for quite some time, and blend with the middle notes as the fragrance fades from the skin. The base notes are responsible for creating a full-bodied aroma that defines the scent.
#3 Testing the Fragrance, choosing top perfumes for women
While trying a new fragrance can seem daunting (especially with all of the options on the market), it’s actually a delightful process. As you may know, each person’s body produces unique hormones and pheromones which define their particular personal aroma. These unique biological codes can alter the scent of any particular scent greatly.
To test a new fragrance, first spray a small amount on a test strip. Waive the strip back and forth a bit to help the fragrance dry (and release the note layers), then smell it. If you like the fragrance, try spraying a small amount on your wrist to test how it reacts with your unique chemistry. Some scents will change when they come in contact with your skin, so it’s always best to spray on pulse points (as it is where blood vessels are the most superficial). If a smell remains consistent and pleasant to your nose, you may have found a winner!
Be sure to take your time when trying out different scents. Don’t try more than two to three scents at once, and give your body time to “react” to a given scent. It also helps to know the general types of fragrances you prefer as well to help narrow down the options (whether floral, clean, etc.).
Lastly, use the internet before you shop! Research reviews and descriptions of scents that you may be interested in, and read the manufacturer description closely. Brands put a lot of effort into making fragrances smell a particular way, so they’re typically accurate!
